Soft Art in a Hard World
Lisa Hinrichs

March 7 - May 24, 2025
Opening Reception March 7, 5-8pm

In this solo exhibition, Lisa Hinrichs offers soft fiber abstractions in response to the elevation of hard and chaotic pressures in the larger world for a moment of respite and reflection. If “softness” embodies qualities like patience, community building, and adaptability, then with time, softness works in opposition to hardness and callousness, like wind and water crumbling the hardest rock. This work celebrates all that is slowly made, gently crafted, and touched by human thoughts and hands.

In Hinrichs’ practice, time is transformed into matter, channeling daily concerns into fragments and layers of life and time. She felts, stitches, weaves, paints, disassembles, and reconstructs textiles. In this way, textiles become both form and content in her work. Important considerations include sustainability, repair, and conservation, and the importance of textiles in relation to care of bodies and homes.

About the Artist

Lisa Hinrichs is a fiber and mixed media artist and a resident of St. Louis. She is a studio artist at the Foundry Art Centre in St. Charles, Missouri, and can be visited upstairs in Studio 9. Lisa holds a degree in Housing and Interior Design from the University of Missouri-Columbia, and later studied Graphic Design at St. Louis Community College. While she has moved on from earlier careers in architecture and graphic design, her love of a well-designed structure or elegantly composed page find their way into her current work. Hinrichs’ work is collected and exhibited locally and nationally, and has been included in various Fiber Art publications.
