Passing Clouds

January 6 - February 11, 2023
Opening Reception January 6, 5-8 PM

Passing Clouds is an electronic musical collaboration between visual artists Jim Daniels and Daniel Stumeier. The project began during the pandemic and developed through Zoom conversations and the exchange of tracks to edit and build upon. Having worked solitarily before, both artists enjoyed the collaborative element of this project as they pushed each other towards experimentation and intellectual risk taking. Prior to this partnership, both participants had developed individual studio practices as visual artists. Although both Daniels and Stumeier had prior musical experience, neither had pursued music with the same fervor they had with visual art. As such, Passing Clouds became an exciting endeavor.

Inspired by this element of the enterprise, they later decided to push the collaborative aspect further by reaching out to visual artists with backgrounds in animation, video, and sculpture - offering Passing Clouds as a community platform. The participating artists made a piece of visual art that Passing Clouds composed a soundtrack for, and vice versa: Passing Clouds made a piece of music that the visual artists then made a work in response to. Through this process, the music and the artworks respond to one another and foster a symbiotic relationship among those involved. These new collaborations have led to experimental realms similar to what Daniels and Stumeier enjoyed at the start of Passing Clouds. The music would not have been the same without the inspiration of the artists involved.
