Block Party Small Block

Be a part of the largest steamroller printing event in the Midwest by carving a small woodblock to be printed at this year’s Block Party!

For our 4th Annual Block Party, we’re adding another exciting way to participate in the festivities. Interested in trying your hand at woodblock carving? A seasoned printmaker who doesn’t want to commit to a larger block? This option is perfect for you!

How it works:
1. Register below and pay the $15 entry fee. The deadline to sign up is May 1st, or once all 64 spots have been filled.
2. Choose whether you will supply your 1ft x1ft 3/4” MDF block or pay an additional $10 to have the Foundry prepare one for you.
3. Pick up your block May 1-11th.
3. Prepare and carve your block.
4. Deliver your completed block by June 1st.
5. Watch your block become part of a larger print on June 15th, 11a-5p.
6. Pick up your block at 5pm on June 15th.

Need help carving your block? Open studio days will be held on May 11th and May 25th, 11am-12:30pm. Free and open to all participants with a block.

FAQ

Why is there an entry fee?
Even if supplying your own block, the fee goes towards not only securing your place as an artist for the event, but it also helps offset materials costs and printer fees.

How do I prepare and carve my block? What materials do I need?
Check out this handy guide for the rundown on making your block Block Party ready! We’ll also have open studio days if you need some extra guidance. Open studio days will be May 11th and May 25th, 11am-12:30pm.

If I’m supplying my own block, what material should I use?
MDF or plywood are allowed for carving on your block. Please keep your dimensions to 1ft x 1ft so that all blocks will fit into the pre-made jig. We use 3/4” MDF, and encourage you to do the same since we know that holds up well to the steamroller.

Can I have my block printed by itself during the Block Party?
Unfortunately, no. We will be printing the small blocks in two runs - 32 blocks for each print will be fitted into a jig to create one large print. Due to limitations in time, materials, and people power, we cannot print each block individually.

What do I get to keep?
You’re welcome to take your block home at 5pm after your block has been printed. Prints will be available for sale.

Do I have to be present at the Block Party to participate?
No, but we hope you’ll be here for the fun! If you’d like to keep your block, you will need to pick it up at the end of the event. Unfortunately, we cannot keep blocks after June 15th.
