September 6 - October 26, 2024
Opening Reception September 6, 5-8pm

In her current solo exhibition, Excavations, Sue Giannotti uses contemporary mosaics to explore the many facets, challenges, and inner dialogue of an introvert living in a society which rewards extroversion.

Just as ancient mosaics are discovered by uncovering something hidden beneath layers, the works in this exhibition emerged as the artist was coming to terms with understanding and accepting how an introvert processes, communicates, adapts, and thrives in our society.

Unconsciously sparked by a random conversation several years ago, her sketches and writings began to circle around this topic that had lain dormant for many years.

In a focused process, each tessera (piece of glass or stone) is thoughtfully placed in such a way as to forge a deliberate conversation of shape, sound, and color with its neighbor, creating intimate, meaningful discussions like the personal ones the artist herself favors.

These minimalist works invite the viewer to pause and explore. Like the ground over a mosaic, the surface may appear one way, but underneath there is much more to be found.

About the Artist

Sue Giannotti is a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis, and is the founder of Mosaic Opus Studio, near St. Louis, Missouri. Her original works have been exhibited and collected in the US, Italy, France, and Japan, and her architectural commissions are part of homes, offices, and liturgical sites across the US. She has shared her passion for mosaic as a teacher of classical and contemporary mosaics for nearly 20 years.

Originally trained in Italy, Giannotti uses millennia-tested tools, techniques, and materials to create contemporary work. Her art is often about capturing the essence of the subject and distilling the image to its essentials, encouraging the viewer to join her across the work in meditation and introspection. She often chooses to work in mosaic for its qualities of texture, the play of light on the surface, and the medium’s ability to look soft and strong at the same time.
