“In the early 1900s, my grandfather came over to the States from Lithuania and wound up in St. Charles. His cousins, the Caplans, were cobblers and opened a shoe store in the area. He worked to earn some money and then sent for my grandmother and uncle. A year later, my dad was born, and two years later, his sister. They all lived on Main Street in an apartment right above the store they eventually opened. It started out as a tailor shop and grew into a men’s clothing store. They sold everything –– suits, work clothes, dickeys, postal uniforms, hats, ties, and tuxedos. Plus they were also a Levi Strauss carrier, which was a big deal at the time. If you mention the store to someone, there’s still an era of people who are like, ‘Rosenblums! I got my first suit at Rosenblums!’”
