Through an interdisciplinary approach, Amy Reidel uses abstract and figurative imagery to illuminate the bittersweet duality of caregiving and motherhood during a time of socio-political turmoil & climate disaster. Her work is inspired by the poignant emotions shared between family members, women’s health issues, the news, and objects of matrilineage and domesticity.
Reidel creates work with a saturated chroma and charming figures that appear inviting, but also function as a confrontation, attempting to save the world through matriarchal revolution. Her artwork compresses the desperation and joy inherent to caregiving into surreal and playful scenes. Reidel’s personal experience with Queer marginalization, female health conditions, and motherhood manifest as exhibitions that at first appear as a glittering rave, but upon closer inspection reveal the subtleties of fear and loss inherent to loving another person in a tumultuous world.
The Grand Hall Art Project, begun in 2021, is an exhibition program featuring original, commissioned work by professional artists installed in the Foundry Art Centre’s Grand Hall. As with all of the Foundry’s arts and exhibitions programs, the project places special emphasis on the extraordinary talent of our region’s artists. These site-specific works will be a major focal point in the space throughout the year, serving as an important and vibrant backdrop for the Foundry’s next year of programming and events. About Amy Reidel
Amy Reidel received her BFA from the University of Missouri-St. Louis, and her MFA at The University of Tennessee. She has been awarded residencies at ACRE (Artists' Cooperative Residency and Exhibitions); the David and Julia White Artists’ colony in Cd. Colón, Costa Rica; and at the Luminary Center for the Arts in St. Louis.
Reidel’s artwork has been widely exhibited in spaces throughout the country including the Contemporary Art Museum-St. Louis, High Low Gallery, Granite City Art and Design District (G-CADD), Lambert International Airport, ACRE projects gallery in Chicago, Fluorescent Gallery in Knoxville, Piano Craft Gallery in Boston, Peep Space in New York, the Center for Visual Art in Denver, and the Amarillo Museum of Art.
Her work has been showcased through media like Young Space, I Like Your Work podcast, Brenda Magazine (UK), St. Louis Public Radio, the PBS program Living St. Louis, the international publications Daily Serving, Strange Fire Collective and the Studio Break podcast.
Reidel co-founded and served as Creative Editor of the publication All the Art: The Visual Art Quarterly of St. Louis, which seasonally printed and distributed 10,000 free copies across all zip codes of the St. Louis region as a means of unifying the disparate art communities present in our area. She was also Co-Founder of the woman-led studio and exhibition space, Coral Green Studios (2022-2025) in South City.
Reidel is a mother to two young children, and lives and works in St. Louis where she is also Assistant Professor and Program Coordinator of General Fine Arts at STLCC-Meramec, and Adjunct Instructor at Washington University.
