Geology in the Expanded Field
Joseph Canizales
January 3 - February 15, 2025
Opening Reception January 3, 5-8pm
Through digital and analog processes, Joseph Canizales’ work reflects upon our understanding of the intertwined relationship between geological forces and our built environment. Canizales draws connections between the modern rapid construction methods of extracting, gathering, and processing of stone and the incredibly slow, yet determined march of naturally occurring erosion. He utilizes 3D printing, 3D modeling, 3D scanning, and analog processes to amplify an understanding of geological sites.
Canizales’ approach to investigating geology creates a conceptual space that capitalizes on digital technology while honoring the inherent nature of geological form, materiality, and time. He has archived dozens of scans that he reconfigures, conglomerates, and manipulates. This commitment makes new forms that echo their original scanned reference or resource material while creating a new visual and physical experience. This echo is an altered version of the original - not a reflection - and is both factual and fictional. Through this echo, Canizales bridges the gap between a geological site and a sculpture, what results is what he describes as echoed sites.
